In the words of the artist: ‘My talk will be about painting in Flanders and Holland in the
16th and 17th century. When I started to paint self portraits 35 years ago, my friends and teachers declared me crazy: Painting was dead! But how could painting be dead, if I wanted to paint so much? And I wanted to know everything about painting: what is it, where does it come from, when will it die?

Looking at the history of painting, gave me the answers to all these questions, and more.’
