North Atlantic Right Whale Skeleton

This is a skeleton of a young female Right whale, approximately two years old and not fully grown.

The North Atlantic Right whale is closely related to the Bowhead (or Greenland Right) whale. The Bowhead whale was hunted to near extinction by whalers, including those from Hull. It is still classified as endangered. They were called ‘Right’ whales because they were considered the right whale to catch. They swam slowly and floated when killed.

North Atlantic Right Whale Skeleton can be viewed at Hull Maritime Museum
