Whalebone Bench

Different parts of the whale’s skeleton were used to make this bench.

The wooden seat of this bench is carved with the heads of a lion and a unicorn with serpentine bodies. The lion and unicorn signify the British royal arms. The lion represents England, and the unicorn Scotland. The symbol originated in 1603 when the two countries were unified.
