William Wilberforce’s Chair

This chair is said to have belonged to William Wilberforce. The chair has a Chinese-style geometric design carved on its arms and legs. This style of decoration was popular in the 1700s when there was a craze for all things Chinese in Britain. The style and period of the chair suggest that it may have been designed by the famous furniture designer and fellow Yorkshireman Thomas Chippendale.
