About Ferens 2020 Open Exhibition

Each year our Open Exhibition provides an exciting opportunity for amateur and professional artists to celebrate creativity side by side in the Ferens Art Gallery’s beautiful temporary exhibition spaces. The display often includes a truly diverse selection of artworks in a variety of styles and media, many of which are also for sale, allowing visitors to purchase original artworks at a range of prices.

The 2020 Open is Ferens’ 53rd annual Open Exhibition, which celebrates some of the best artistic talent in the region. The exhibition features more than 370 artworks including paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, textiles and film produced by local amateur and professional artists.

This year’s exhibited works were selected by a panel of judges consisting of visual artist Graham Dean, whose artwork is represented in the Ferens permanent collection, freelance curator Angela Kingston and Kenn Taylor, creative director at Artlink.

Ferens 2020 Open Exhibition

Over 250 artists from across the UK have work exhibited in the Ferens 2020 Open exhibition, with artist’s submitting work from Scunthorpe to Glasgow, and London to Lincoln. This year’s exhibition features incredible work from local and regional artists, as well as impressive art from further afield. We are delighted to exhibit work by artists at all career stages, and across a range of different mediums.

The annual Open exhibition is a celebration of creative talent, and a highlight of the Ferens exhibition programme. Some of this year’s artists have shared their thoughts on Ferens Art Gallery and being involved with the 2020 Open:

“Being able to see my work in my hometown and bring my family along will always make me proud.”
Paige Graham-Buckle, 2020 Open Artist

“Group exhibitions are important to connect artists to others, and in particular their viewing audience. The public are provided with a diverse choice of art in all its many forms and styles and this encourages exchanges of opinions”.
Douglas Gray, People’s Vote Winner

“It’s always nice to have work featured in the Ferens, it’s such an important venue for Hull, so to have my work showcased there along with some other fantastic artists is great.”
Karim Skalli, 2020 Open Artist

“I am really looking forward to the reopening of Ferens, because I have read a lot around Wyndham Lewis during the lockdown, I want to have a close look of Self-Portrait as Tyro by him in Ferens”.
Yusi Ding, Future Ferens Young and Emerging Talent Prize Winner
