Humber Museums Partnership - Sewerby’s Schalcken

The seventeenth century portrait of the honourable Mary Lowther by the Dutch artist Gottfried Schalcken is on tour! It usually hangs on the staircase wall at Sewerby Hall. A major retrospective of the master’s oeuvre was on display at the Wallraff-Richardts Museum in Cologne until January. It was from there, accompanied by the Sewerby Hall curator, Janice Smith, the painting has travelled on to Dordrechts Museum, Dordrecht, Holland for the second leg of its grand tour where it was installed on 4th February. Dordrecht was the birthplace of the artist so it is fitting that this resplendent painting should be part of this major exhibition. Also in no small way it places the Museums Service collection on the international circuit.
